The Boy Next Door

Sits in dejection, twirling his fingers. He is lost in thoughts crowded with questions seeking an explanation for his solitude. He stares for an eternity in stillness holding his tear and a prominent fear. The melting wax furthers him into an abyss. He tries evading those faces on the wall responsible for this calamity; shadows of which haunt him. And this silence, it frightens him. He waits endlessly to escape oblivion and those intimidating figures which continue to inflict pain.

I walk towards him, to bring him back from a haunting past to the beauty of present. I break down.... for he holds a face, that of mine.

Oppurtunity Lost ?

When it comes to nominating creative work and people, more often than not, we falter.

Academy Awards open doors for International film makers to showcase their work. A window of oppurtunity for the int'l sector to peek into other's diversity and sensibilities. Indians have chipped in with nominations ranging from mindless to decent in the recent past. Incompetent creations. While few were appreciable, most lacked any creative edge to out do others entries.

Black(2005) surprisingly didn't appeal to FFI. Rather a mindless subject like Paheli sneaked in. I was mighty confident in AB, Rani or S.L.Bhansali giving others a serious run for money. Atleast in one department. An oppurtunity lost !

This year has seen some out standing products. Good call ! Chak De is inspiring but unfit for Academies. Technically not impressive. Will laud its inspiring concept and performances.

Eklavya is beautiful, and has well conceived scenes. Art work and AB stand out. So does cinematography. But Chopra fails to cash in on his brigade of talented actors. They do a commendable job and an overall okaish product, slow narration and a sagging script dent its competence at top level, I felt. Lets hope it draws appreciation for AB atleast.

Haven't watched Dharam. Let's count on the talented Pankaj Kapoor.

Gandhi My Father which banks on stellar performances is my natural choice. Akshaye's act takes him several notches above his peers. Shefali is breath taking. Darshan Jariwala as Gandhi fails to pull off a Ben Kingsley, yet impresses. The Gandhi factor would have been enough for people to sit upright and take note of this masterpiece. This period film appeals aesthetically too, set up in pre-independence back drop, and fitting in its genre, it could have been a decent contender.

Another opportunity lost ? Well, no expectations. But why not put our best foot forward ?

" In the air...

...and teyken "....exclaims Ravi Shastri in his trademark style, from the commentary box...miles away.

Somewhere on the road side : A small crowd gathers near a kiosk.Glued to an ol' idiot box. Any ad at a gripping moment will be booed. Unperturbed attention and tense expressions address the situation. Every ball watched in anticipation, every stroke whistled in appreciation and an all too crucial wicket cheered. Pumping their adrenalin and making them delirious. More so, if we have beaten our arch rivals - Pakis. A win eventually makes people go berserk. Fire works follow. One-off or a tournament's crunch encounter, the reaction is same and deafening. Mood no less than festive !

Celebrations kick start. Welcome to India ! Home of Cricket.

Jump drive, (the next day).

Early morning walks witness grandpas and co. involved in animated analysis. Today's jog at the colony park will be longer. Their better halves will chip in too ! with a word or two.

Scenario at home: a father- son duo compete for the sports column. One wins, the other shrugs. All this, to get equipped on what is to follow. After all, they will be part of various forums, if not the nucleus of them, at some point in their offices/colleges/hangouts, today.

Conversations in public transports are the best of all. Who knows ? even a rickshaw wallah may be well-equipped today, to break ice and grab a distant oppurtunity of striking convo with his passenger. Post match analysis and all that. Such is the love and passion for the game here.

Loaded buses offer mind blowing GDs on favourite star's histrionics, team spirit, turning points, nail biting moments and edge-of-the seat stuff. Another typical setting: - our Uncleji is busy reading the daily. Caught in a bottle-neck, trapped, despo co-passengers attempt glancing at head lines. Falter. But don't give up. Neighbours restlessly await their turn. (They are the same under privileged, who lost the morning battle at the sports column and shrugged it off ). Ofcourse, the property is returned scrupulously after use. Forums here are a treat to be part of. Everyone puts forward their point, sounding like seasoned players who missed the bus to ' Final 11 '.

Cut.

Class rooms abuzz with student groups. Retreats no different either. Lunch sessions are spicier, with intense debates. Expect the journey back home to be of equal vigor. A visit to our pani puri bandi late in the evening and our Raju Bhayya is busy presenting his take on The Event. Till next dawn, the highlights are rewinded and replayed monotonously, a zillion times.

Believe me, its tough not being part of such engaging affairs. Especially after winning T20-WC. Anyways, I will sign off humming the Govinda number - "It happens only in India..."

Adios !

Fault Finder

My dear... fault finder,
You are a time grinder.
Not a thought binder.
This is a gentle reminder,
That you are growing blinder
Oh ! ...fault finder,
Try and be kinder !

One lucky MA..

Felt like one lucky bloke. Felt like a mad ass too. Lucky for landing in Mizzou and in the company of a fantastic friend. I am proud. MA because I complain. About trivial things. GPS with his rich experiences from IIT- Kanpur, inspires me. He is an ocean of knowledge with deep reserves of patience. A v.good critic and guide. Humble and down to earth.

The realisation of what I've been losing all these years was depressing. But has also given me a platform of sorts, to regain my lost zeal. Another oppurtunity to resurrect myself. I hope to pull up my socks, fine tune my approach and channelize my energies to be more productive and creative.

God Bless !

Time Frame

Exactly an year from now, I wonder how things will have shaped up. What would my picture be like ? Am rattled at this thought. Sends a shiver or two down my spine. I see a nebulous sketch of a young Mechanical Engineer ( ofcourse !) with oozing confidence and inexhaustible energy levels, well equipped to face situations and challenges head on. Will he stand tall ? Can he ? or succumb to the software syndrome and die the death of a fly attracted to the fluorescence ? ( terrible line, bear with me ! ) is the question in asking. Yes, this is my take on the software jobs. Also, I hate to be a confined worker. Monotonously on the same crap for ages will be stagnating and spelling death of sorts. This notion is purely based on feedbacks from friends who are into it.

For me to be eligible to dream, I need to untangle myself. A jack of many arts that I am, would do no good. A call has to be made. A strategy has to be chalked out and adhered to. Here I am, half way through my masters and yet unsure. Unsure of how the future will unfold. I can claim to be "open" wrt my job preferences, land in a consultancy or two and get started ( which I agree isn't a cakewalk either ) with a decent pay in a s/w co. or battle it out for a commendable ME post in an established firm. Speculations ! speculations !

On a serious note, I aspire to become a core ME. Any other stream will strongly discount all these years of professional studies as an ME. I can't afford to hand over things to fate. I simply cannot ! owing to my disinterest in s/w and all that. Let us see.

A rapid transformation ( in the phenomenal sense of it ) ought to be scripted, to succeed in the first place. Working more vigorously, with high intensities of concentration and passion will take me closer to my goal. The seeds of discipline have already been sowed. I have been trained to slog it out and in style, thanks to the VMS ( my intermediate college) cult I belonged to. Switching gears to get back to old ways to define new one's shouldn't be erratic, given the determination and energy levels to succeed and excel.

Loads of work awaits. Taking leave.

Adios !
